The Civil War Victorian Period Home

Mott's1865 Home

From the Mott's Miniatures MuseumTM,  Mott Family CollectionTM.   The 1865 Mott Home, Civil War Period.  The 1865 house is an exact copy of the one DeWitt's grandfather, Lamoine Mott, built, in which both DeWitt and his father were born and raised.  When the Motts lived in Des Moines the house was still standing and its owners allowed them to go in and take measurements and note room arrangements.  While there, Allegra Mott made careful sketches of the pattern on the tiles of the living room fireplace and copied them exactly in miniature.

Mott's 1865 Home

The house has three bedrooms, one with a nursery attached, quilting and sewing rooms - the latter with a real working German sewing machine - library, kitchen, dining and living rooms.  Because in those days rugs had to be kept relatively small so they could be taken out and beaten, they were often woven in three-foot-wide strips.  After some searching, Mrs. Mott found a weaver who was willing to reproduce the rugs for her in three-inch-wide strips.  Heat in this house was provided by a fireplace in every room, light by oil lamps and candles.

Kitchen of the 1865 House

The stove and all of the kitchen utensils are antique.  DeWitt Mott hand carved the furniture pieces, which are copies of his grandmother's furniture.
